A Tithing Community

In 2001, Our Lady of Guadalupe Parishioners were introduced to the Gerry McKenna Tithing Program.  The program explains a modern adaptation of the ancient biblical practice of thing.  Tithing is God’s Plan for Giving.  Let’s make it our own! 

            We hope that you, too, along with many of your friends and neighbors in our parish community, will reap the benefits of God’s blessing in your own family, in our parish family, and throughout the Church Universal. 

            The main points of the program are summarized:

             Material Needs of Our Church

             Almighty God, as a pure and infinitely perfect spirit, has no need of material goods.  In spite of the entrance of the government into various areas of charity and education, the basic needs of religion must be met by the offerings of individual Church members.

             Our Need to Express Gratitude

             It is basic to our human nature and our self-respect to desire to express gratitude when we receive something.  All our spiritual and material blessings, even our own existence, are gifts that we have received from God.  God has providentially united our need to acknowledge His goodness with the needs of His Church.

             Measure of Our Return to the Lord

             The practical question arises:  “How much of our material goods should we return to the Lord?”  The only direct answer that God has ever given is the tithe – or 10 percent.  He lovingly invites us to share in His abundance.  Even though this standard was set in a different economic situation, it is still found to be the best answer to this question.  It is both an adequate response and an economically feasible one.

             Method of Our Return to the Lord

             We make our return to the Lord wherever we meet Him.  We meet God in every opportunity to practice charity, either directly to our neighbor, or indirectly through some charitable agency such as Catholic Charities, United Way or the like.  Our primary meeting place with God is our parish Church.  It is here that we unite with the priest in celebrating the Mass, and are nourished by the sacraments.  Therefore, Our Return to the Lord may be made in this way: five percent through our parish, and five percent through other charities. 

            More and more believers are becoming responsible stewards by implementing the practice of tithing.  We hope that these few words of explanation will encourage you to reflect on God’s Plan for Giving and make it your own.

•      34 acres purchased by Archdiocese of Philadelphia at York and Quarry Roads in Buckingham.  1997

•      Announcement of new parish to be formed from Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Parish in Doylestown.  May 2000

•      Clergy assigned to New Parish in Buckingham.  Fr. Joseph Quindlen, Pastor,  Fr. Robert McDermott, Parochial Vicar, and Deacon Joseph Gousie, Permanent Deacon. June 2000

•      Meeting at OLMC for the consultation of the parishioners for the naming of our new parish. June 2000

•      Foundation of Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish on July 1, 2000.  Parish blessed with over 1600 families at Founding.

•      Installation Mass of Founding Pastor, Fr. Joseph Quindlen. July 2000

•      Designated Masses at 5pm Saturday Vigil and 10am Sunday at OLMC. July 2000

•      Hiring of Parish Business Manager. July 2000

•      Purchase of Rectory in Fireside Development. July 2000

•      Lease of Parish Offices at HollyBerry Square Shopping Center.  July 2000

•      Hiring of Parish Secretary.  August 2000

•      OLG Parish CCD on Tuesdays through OLMC CCD.  September 2000
